What a Realistic Yacht Charter Budget Actually Looks Like

One of the most common mistakes first-time charterers make is underestimating the total cost of a sailing vacation. The base charter rate is just the beginning.

For a bareboat charter in the BVI or Caribbean, base rates for a well-maintained 40 to 45 foot catamaran typically run between $4,000 and $8,000 per week, depending on the season and the vessel.

On top of the base rate, you should budget for: provisioning ($100 to $150 per person per day), fuel, marina fees, and a security deposit (usually $2,000 to $5,000).

The bottom line: for a week-long bareboat charter for four people in the BVI, a realistic all-in budget is $8,000 to $14,000. For a crewed charter for the same group, plan on $12,000 to $22,000.
