The Bahamas by Sail: An Honest Assessment

The Bahamas is one of the most visually stunning sailing destinations on earth. The water colors — ranging from deep turquoise to pale aquamarine to translucent white — are unlike anything you will find in the Caribbean. The Exumas in particular are extraordinary.

But the Bahamas is not the BVI. It requires more experience, more preparation, and more patience. The Gulf Stream crossing from Florida requires careful weather planning. Navigation in the Bahamas requires attention — the waters are shallow in many areas.

The rewards are significant. The Exumas offer some of the most beautiful anchorages in the world. My recommendation: the Bahamas is best suited for sailors with genuine offshore experience.
